Brett Conrad’s Newsletter A Must-Read
Posted by ajali in COOL STUFF, Green Technology, Los Angeles on July 20, 2010
Brett Conrad has one of the more insightful newsletters I’ve seen in a long time. He’s a brilliant eco-friendly capital advisor and the Managing Partner of Longboard Capital. I enjoy the information he shares. So, I thought I’d share some of it with you. An excerpt from today’s newsletter…
I see the recent rise of Tesla Motors as historically significant. One of the most striking indicators that clean tech is approaching its tipping point is Tesla’s (TSLA) recent public offering. This IPO was one of the few this year in which the offering price was bumped up during road shows. It ismiraculous for this to happen against the backdrop of a weak market, and the pall hanging over the US automotive business. In fact, the last company to go public making automobiles was Ford in 1956. After all, Tesla has lost money, sells only one product to the public (the Tesla Roadster), and has little experience manufacturing vehicles in significant quantities after selling only about 1,000 Roadsters around the world. So, why are investors bidding up the price for Tesla’s stock?
For one thing, Toyota invested $50 million in the company a few months ago and just announced Tesla will be supplying drive trains and batteries on a future Rav4 EV. Also, Daimler and Tesla have a development contract that has Tesla making battery packs and drive trains for Daimler’selectric car called Smart for Two, due for release next year in Europe. Certainly there is a trend here. Tesla is inspiring confidence that it can become dominant in a new era of personal electric transportation. Yet, Tesla also seems to be demonstrating the branding potential not only of a clean sexy car, but of the entire clean tech movement: I would wager that the general public is eager to buy the principle of smarter as well as cleaner.
Whether this startup becomes the Edsel of electric cars or more akin to the Apple of computing really doesn’t matter. Tesla is a harbinger of how clean technology will be commonplace in a future that forces naysayers to give up trying to stymie the march of progress.
It’s rather interesting and ironic that the sudden success of Tesla Motors and BP’s oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico are events garnering side-by-side headlines.
The name Tesla recalls the eccentric electrical engineer whose copious inventions include the first AC motor, the devise we know as a spark plug, and wireless electric power supply. British Petroleum, on the other hand, is emblematic of archaic fossil fuels that have become entrenched as the sources of power for technologies innovated by geniuses like Tesla.

Justin Timberlake Golf Course Eco-Friendly
Posted by ajali in CELEBRITIES, Green Celebs, REGIONS, Tennessee on July 14, 2010
Mirimichi, a golf course in Tennessee owned by superstar Justin Timberlake, is the first golf course in the U.S. to be designated as a certified Audubon International Classic Sanctuary.
Mirimichi has also become the first golf course in North, South or Central America to receive Golf Environment Organization (GEO) Certified status. The designation signifies that Mirimichi has met comprehensive and advanced sustainability requirements, and uses them to both drive continual improvement, and communicate the back-story behind their success. With GEO Certification Mirimichi becomes one of just 10 courses world-wide to receive the prestigious designation. The full details of Mirimichi’s certification can be found on the GEO website at: www.golfenvironment.org/mirimichi.
Q&A with Justin Timberlake
Why did you decide to get involved with Mirimichi?
“When I was 10 years old I learned to play golf at Big Creek Golf Course. When I heard that the golf course was up for auction, I wanted to step in and save the golf course from potential development. My family and I want the redesigned and rebranded course to be a place that everyone can enjoy and where we can grow the game of golf.”
What are some of the environmental features that make Mirimichi unique / why was this important to you?
As part of the renovation of the course, I started asking questions about whether you can turn a golf course into an eco-friendly place. It turns out you can. The clubhouse will be Platinum LEED certified when it is complete and that is an extremely grueling process but very rewarding. While we have several initiatives that make Mirimichi eco-friendly, one of the greatest in my opinion is that while we use 80 percent of the energy we produce, we return 20 percent to the Tennessee Energy Grid.
What does Mirimichi mean to you?
Some of my heritage is Native American. I thought it would be fitting with all of the eco-friendly features of the course to find a name that reflected that heritage. I have been told that Mirimichi means, ‘place of happy retreat,’ and that is what the experience at this golf course is all about — a place to enjoy time with family and friends.

“I couldn’t believe that is what happens for a wallet or purse,” says Jenna. “There’s faux alligator, faux python… I think there’re a lot of different things you can find — you just have to ask.”
Jenna has also teamed with Energy Muse to create men’s and women’s bracelets made of completely vegan materials, with a portion of the proceeds going to PETA to combat the exotic skins industry.
Victoria’s Secret, H&M, Overstock.com, Cole Haan and Nike have all signed PETA’s pledge promising never to sell exotic skins.
Dixon Golf Receives First Ever “Green Thumbs Up Award” From CGL
Dixon Golf took one more step in solidifying its corporate message of environmental responsibility when it signed its lease to occupy the third floor of the Tempe Transportation Center late last month. The LEED-NC registered (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certified building is located in the heart of Tempe at 200 E. 5th Street.
The building boasts many eco-friendly features, such as natural ventilation, lights made from recycled traffic signal lights and a ventilated desert ‘green roof’ – similar to a roof garden to offset heat. The building is a flexible 100 year building, designed to accommodate many uses over time. A solar veil on the east side of the building provides shade to the large windows facing 5th Street. These features help reduce the energy consumption of the building by 52 percent compared to the same building without the advanced eco-friendly technology.
“Authenticity is of utmost importance to us. We want to be ‘green’ in every aspect of our business. That’s why we make the golf balls we do, why we run a paperless office and why our apparel is made from bamboo. This building closes the circle on making Dixon Golf the most eco-friendly golf company there is,” said Dixon Golf CEO, William Carey.
The building also serves as the hub for all of Tempe’s mass transit agencies. It functions as a light rail stop and the main hub for Tempe’s busses. Bustling Mill Ave. is two blocks to the west, providing food and entertainment options to the staff and visitors of the Transportation Center.
Dixon Golf’s third floor space will include offices, two conference rooms, a putting green and a golf simulator. The countertops will be made from recycled paper, called paper stone and the veneer will be made from bamboo.
Other unique eco-friendly aspects of the Tempe Transportation Center
• Seeking LEED Platinum Certification
• Recyclable carpet throughout the building
• Flooring made from recycled bus tires
• All the furnishings are made from recyclable material, or are recyclable themselves
• No forest wood was used in the building

Jimmy Buffett Helps Save Gulf Birds & Marine Life

Singer Jimmy Buffett and his friends are coming to the rescue of birds and marine life in the Gulf. Their new rescue boats are specially designed to navigate the shallow waters of marshlands where larger boats can’t enter.
“Essentially we sketched something out on a cocktail napkin and came up with the idea,” says Mark Castlow, a Vero Beach, FL area boat builder. When he shared the idea with Buffett, the legend agreed to underwrite the $43,000 cost of the boat.
Angelina Jolie Urges People To Remember The Refugees
Posted by ajali in CELEBRITIES, Green Celebs on June 26, 2010
On June 20th the world solemnly recognized World Refugee Day. Angelina Jolie toured third world countries and made a United Nations video. In a world of superficiality in Hollywood, Angelina is proving to be as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside. Angelina Talking About Refugees
From CBS News:
With her upcoming spy film “Salt” about to be released, actress Angelina Jolie has concluded a journey to a small troubled village along the Ecuadoran border with Colombia, meetiing with some of the thousands of Colombian refugees there.
The U.N. goodwill ambassador went to address the abuses suffered by Colombian women and children refugees.
In her firsts visit to the unstable zone in eight years, Jolie held a meeting on Friday with Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa and other senior government officials in Shushufindi.
She began her two-day visit on Thursday at the secluded border settlement of Barranca Bermeja. According to the U.N., the women whom Jolie met there had each lost two children in Colombia’s internal war.
The Associated Press reported that more than 50,000 refugees are registered in Ecuador though unofficial estimates put the number at more than 170,000.
Join Hands With Jason Mraz
Posted by ajali in CELEBRITIES, Green Celebs, Los Angeles on June 25, 2010
Jason Mraz is one of the most enlightened artists I’ve never met. I hope to soon since he’s only one degree of separation away, I love his music and his style and he’s truly living out the green lifestyle. He’s an easy choice for our Top 100 Green Celebrities list. Check out this excerpt from his blog today where he shares his open, honest and heartfelt thoughts:
I don’t live THAT close to the beach. I have to drive at least 20 minutes to get to my local break and that’s IF I catch all the green lights. Recently I’ve been holding a heavy stomach about that simple drive – guzzling gas up and down my coast in search of waves. The onshore wind and overcast skies make the water crumbly and near-impossible to surf, though - I’m grateful the water is clean. All along the beaches of our Gulf Coast, surfers, fisherman and summer vacationing families and businesses are beginning to see the Oil devastation up close. For those who love a simple walk on the beach now walk in disbelief and have to watch closely to avoid walking in hazardous tar. Swimming is out of the question – and with oil still flowing offshore, it could be years before these coasts are suitable to support life and recreation….
See more of Jason’s blog at http://freshnessfactorfivethousand.blogspot.com/ and his official website (one of the coolest sites around) at www.jasonmraz.com. Buy more of his music so he can have more green to do more great things for people and the environment.
